2048 is a free, open-source puzzle game created in 2014 by a 19-year-old Italian web developer named Gabriele Cirulli, who built it over a single weekend and published it on GitHub under the MIT License. It went on to consume roughly four million human lives in its first week. Not because it's complicated — it's the opposite of complicated — but because your brain will not let you stop. Here's the deal. You've got a 4×4 grid. Two tiles are sitting on it, each showing the number 2. You swipe in a direction — up, down, left, right — and every tile on the board slides that way until it hits a wall or another tile. If two tiles with the same number collide, they merge into one tile worth their sum. Two 2s become a 4. Two 4s become an 8. Two 8s become a 16. After every swipe, a new tile (usually a 2, occasionally a 4) pops up in a random empty space. Your goal is to keep combining tiles until you forge the mythical 2048 tile. The problem is that every move spawns a new tile, the grid is only 16 squares, and the moment you can't move — because every space is full and no neighbors match — you're dead. It's basically a territory war between you and entropy, and entropy is very patient. The strategy is deceptively deep for something with four inputs. Experienced players will tell you to pick a corner, keep your biggest tile parked there, and build a descending cascade along one edge — sort of like organizing a shelf where the heaviest books go on one end. The moment you let a big tile drift into the middle, your board starts to choke. You'll develop opinions about this. You'll start swiping left in your sleep. This is normal. It's free, it's open-source, it runs in any browser, and a round takes about ten minutes — or four hours, depending on how many times you whisper "one more try" to yourself. You should play it right now. You should also clear your afternoon.

Pool Merge Mania is a clever spin on classic pool where bouncing shots meet merging mayhem. You play the part of ‘Airball’ as an evil wizard has turned you into a bouncing ball of air with a slow leak! The only way to break the spell is to find the various ingredients and the spell book to break the magic curse! Work your way through the hundreds of levels of isometric rooms on your quest. Remember on each level if you stay on an ‘inflating station’ for too long it will cause you to burst! You can monitor your air level with the onscreen gauge. Using the directional controls and the jump button, jump across gaps and weave through obstacles. Get points by gathering gems during your quest, and ascend stairs by jumping, but watch out for the spikes and other hazards which will burst you! For some levels you will need to obtain special items to proceed such as candles for dark rooms, but don’t forget you are always up against the clock as you are slowing deflating, so also keep a look out for the random pumps to inflate you and buy you more time but without over pressurising and bursting yourself! Will you find the ingredients and use the spell book to lift the curse and save yourself before time runs out! Good luck Airball! Originally released in 1987 across multiple formats including MS-DOS, Amiga, Atari and others. This version is the MS-DOS version.

Gamedev.js 2026 submission [ CONFIDENTIAL - INTERNAL USE ONLY ] PROJECT CODE: ECHO_DECODER DATE: 2004/11/04 SUBJECT: MAIN NODE Debugging Protocol [ SYSTEM OVERVIEW ] Welcome to DataCorp. As a newly appointed operator, your primary directive is to maintain the stability of the ECHO_DECODER main node. Due to the permanent degradation of this terminal's graphical interface, you must rely entirely on the manual override protocol. Listen closely to the intercepted audio packets—consisting of short pulses and heavy low-frequency drones—and calibrate the frequency via physical switches within the allotted time. This is a rigid, unforgiving corporate procedure. Random guesswork is strictly prohibited. [ OPERATOR PROTOCOL ] Audio-Only Decryption: Discard visual dependency. You must learn to isolate [ ▬ LONG ] and [ ● SHORT ] signals amidst the static. Strict Execution Sequence: The system has zero tolerance for error. Do NOT press the [ EXECUTE ] button until all parameter switches are locked. Premature submission or mindless testing will trigger a severe system backfire. Operator Reference: If you cannot memorize the base frequencies, refer to cheat_sheet.txt on your virtual desktop. It is the only asset left by your predecessor. Escalating Interference: As you delve deeper into the nodes, audio corruption will spike exponentially. Maintain focus. Evan's Remains is a mystery-thriller puzzle adventure about finding a missing boy: Evan. The game combines logic-based platform puzzles with narrative inspired by Japanese graphic adventure games. Gameplay: Every time the player solves from two to three puzzles, the story goes forward and new mechanics are introduced. The challenge of the puzzles lies in the player’s ability to figure out what do rather than solve challenges based on skill. As the difficulty curve increases, the puzzles become more complex by combining two or more previously introduced mechanics. Story: Evan, the genius boy, has been missing for years. One day, a letter signed by him is received, claiming he’s on an uninhabited island somewhere in the Pacific Ocean. Nobody knows why, but he asked specifically for a girl named “Dysis” to go and look for him. The player will take control of this girl, who we don’t know much about. As we follow Dysis’s adventure, questions will start to be answered little by little. All of the little puzzle pieces which seemed unrelated in the beginning will now begin to slowly fit together as the truth is slowly revealed.

Hextris is a fast-paced puzzle game where colored blocks fall from the edges of the screen toward a central hexagon, and you rotate that hexagon to catch them on its six faces. When three or more blocks of the same color touch each other on adjacent faces or stacked on the same face, they disappear and everything above slides down. Let any stack grow past the outer grey hexagon boundary and it's over. The core mechanic is deceptively simple: blocks fall, you rotate left or right, colors match and clear. But the speed ramps quickly, and the six-sided geometry means you're managing six independent stacks simultaneously while blocks rain in from every direction. You have to think about where each color is building up, which face has room, and whether rotating to catch an incoming block will accidentally bury a color you were about to clear somewhere else. It's the Tetris problem of "I need this piece but not here" multiplied across six faces at once. Combos are where the scoring gets interesting. Clear multiple color groups in quick succession and a combo timer appears as a receding outline around the outer hexagon. Chain clears within that window and your score multiplies. High-level play is about setting up chain reactions, intentionally letting colors stack in ways that cascade into multi-clear combos when you finally trigger them. Created by a group of high school students from Boston at a hackathon and refined over three months, Hextris hit #1 on Hacker News, trended on GitHub, and became one of those games people pass around in browser tabs at work. It's built entirely in JavaScript on the HTML5 Canvas, runs in any browser, and is fully open source under the GPL license. No ads, no monetization, no installs. The flat UI design is clean and readable even at high speed, which matters when you're spinning a hexagon and tracking four incoming blocks at once. FEATURES ∙ Rotate a hexagon to catch falling colored blocks on six faces ∙ Match 3+ same-colored blocks to clear them ∙ Chain clears for combo multipliers ∙ Escalating speed keeps every session intense ∙ Clean flat UI designed for readability at high speed ∙ Runs in any browser, no install required
You work nights at an afterlife telephone exchange. The living ring in wanting to speak to someone who died. They never say the name. They say "my late mother, the one I miss most at Christmas," and then they wait. Ten case files sit on your desk. Four of those ghosts are on the line tonight. One of them liked snowmen and family gatherings. Work out which caller wants which ghost, then get up out of your chair and carry the plug across the floor to their socket yourself. The lines can't cross on the floor. Anchor posts lift one over another. The wiring is old, and if you hold too many live lines at once the breaker goes and you're patching in the dark until you find the frequency again. Eight nights. Three strikes each. Nobody is in a hurry - the callers have all the time there is.

Neverball is a 3D ball-rolling game in the lineage of Marble Madness and Super Monkey Ball. You guide a ball through obstacle courses by tilting the ground beneath it using your mouse, keyboard, or joystick. The ball has real physics and real momentum, which means every slight tilt matters, every overcorrection sends you careening toward an edge, and every narrow bridge becomes a test of nerve. The floor moves. The ball reacts. You try not to fall into the void. Each level has a simple goal: collect enough coins to activate the exit pad, then reach it before time runs out. Yellow coins are worth 1, red coins 5, blue coins 10. Collect 100 total and you earn an extra life. The levels start gentle enough, teaching you how the tilt-and-roll relationship works. Then they introduce moving platforms. Then mazes. Then pushers that shove your ball sideways. Then narrow ramps over bottomless drops with moving obstacles and a 30-second timer. The difficulty curve goes from "pleasant Sunday puzzle" to "controller-gripping precision platformer" across 183 levels. Three highscore categories per level reward different playstyles: most coins collected, fastest time to unlock the goal, and fastest time to complete the level. Speedrunning and coin-optimization runs require completely different approaches to the same course, which gives every level at least two reasons to replay it.
